The Golf Capital of the World
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
USA 2007 Report
Travel
8 hours flight time to Atlanta then transfer to an internal flight
for 1 hour to Myrtle Beach. That is assuming the American immigration
authorities decide to let you in!
We flew Delta this is a good idea as they will accommodate you on
the internal flight if for any reason you miss your intended connection,
i.e. held up at immigration trying to get into the country.
It is possible to fly direct to Charlotte or Raleigh but you are
faced with a 3 hour drive to your final destination.
The Hotel
The Hampton Inn at Broadway has been our choice for the last eight
years. We have continued to use this particular hotel because you
can walk out of an evening to visit a multitude of restaurants.
The rooms are comfortable and have all the facilities you would
need. TV, hairdryer, etc. Breakfast is buffet style but more of
a continental with beagles, fruit jams. If you are looking for the
all American fried breakfast a short five minuets drive to Denny's
will set you up for the day.

The Resort
Broadway at the Beach has been modelled on Disney Village at Lake
Buena Vista in Florida. Since its construction the resort has one
Carolinas top tourist attraction award over four times.
Built around a large lake, there is everything you could want to
eat, drink, purchase or entertain yourself. Some of the leading
food chains have restaurants here, Liberty's Steak House, Joes Crab
Shack, Tony Roma's Ribs, Hard Rock Café to name just a few,
and my personal favourite Yamoto Japanese. This of course is Japanese
cooking American style very entertaining and delicious.
As well as plenty to eat there is plenty to buy with gift shops
galore and to entertain there is Riplys Aquarium, I Max cinema,
Dragons Lair mini golf but for the serious shopper a fifth teen
minuet drive to the Tanger outlets stores is a must. With the dollar
at two to the pound some great bargains were to be had. Needless
to say a few of our guests had some excess baggage worries on the
day of departure.

The Golf
It is very hard to describe, this is the golf capital of the world,
over 125 courses in 65 miles, and I have played many but have yet
to really scratch the surface. The recent tour had seven rounds
over the Man o War, The Witch, The Wizard, Possum Trot, Heather
Glen, Glen Dornoch and the Kings North course at Myrtle Beach National.
All of the courses were popular with our guests but for me two courses
stood out Heather Glen a recommendation from Robbie Cook of Boyce
Hill, and a great recommendation it turned out to be. A beautiful
layout running through woodlands, after playing a couple of holes
you felt you might be playing in Surry, St Georges Hill or one of
the two courses at the Berkshire sprang to mind. The other outstanding
course was a personal indulgence for me this was the Arnold Palmer
designed Kings North, typical big and manicured with the famous
par 5 sixth hole aptly named the Gambler, an island fairway foreshortens
the hole considerably.
Over the years we have not been disappointed with the courses in
this area and there are still plenty to play.
Tourism
The Myrtle Beach area is modern and brash so for some culture a
two hour drive to Charleston is a must. This is where it all started
the war of independence, plantation houses, the Battery, Fort Sumter,
and much more a horse and carriage ride gives you a great insight
into this beautiful town.

The Winners
There were some strong contenders for the winning spots in this
event. In the ladies event in third place from Warley Park Pat Martin,
in second spot and narrowly missing out Maggie Cook from Boyce Hill
and the overall winner and first time entrant from Kingswood GC
Helen Hughes who lead early in the tournament faltered in the middle
rounds but finished strong for victory.
In the men's event in third place from Five Lakes Peter Cock in
second from Boyce Hill Mickey Cook and the overall winner from Forrester
Park Ron Stovell who has played in every Myrtle Beach and past winner.
Next September we have our next
tour to the States and it is a must for keen golfers starting at
Pinhurst in North Caroliner we are playing the no 2 course, used
many times for the US Open, the last time one there by the late
great Payne Stuart. The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island remember the
agony on Bernard Langers face as he narrowly missed retaining the
Ryder Cup, and Harbour Town a regular stop on the US PGA Tour. We
will also be playing some other fantastic courses. If you would
like information on this or any other tour please contact us , details
